About the book >.>.> So that we are never truly concentrating on either. If we are to combat this tendency if we want to get ourselves undistracted we need to remember (or relearn) what it is to truly be with objects around us. This is the opposite of “browsing” as we do online or in stores or in libraries (once upon a time when people went to libraries) walking up and down the rows of bookshelves. Attending to our material surroundings means stopping and slowing down. It’s like taking a single volume off the shelf and reading it cover to cover. The travel writer Jan Morris has remarked that one of the things she looks for in a building is the feeling that “you could pick [it] up to my mind a characteristic of great architecture- think of the Chrysler Building or the Doge’s Palace or the Romanesque chapels of Spain!” I like this idea because it aptly captures the sense of imaginative possession that one can have in the contact zone. It would be a mistake to believe that material intelligence is only applied through taculity via making or touching. Nor does it necessarily require that we have lots of information at our disposal. If you are standing in front of a building say a Romanesque chapel in Spain you can find out all about it on Google-the date the style the history of its renovations. But this is not living in the contact zone It’s not a matter of being informed or simply having see something checking it off the list. Rather it is a habit of mind. in which we have receptiveness and curiosity about the world around us. (SP)
