About the book >.>.> Rut Blees Luxemburg is well known for her investigations into the urtan landscape. Through her work she explores how the cityscape both reflects and affects the human condition. Luxemburg takes photographs at night on the edge of the centre of the city long exposures allow her to use the light emanating from the street only – from office blocks and street lights The resulting works are seductive beautiful but at the same time there is an underlying sense of anxiety. Our subjectivity both forms and is formed by the city in Luxemburg’s work the streets seem to be alive they inhale and exhale. Although devoid of the human figure the photographs evoke the body through the presence of nature – beaches rivers weeds puddles – and undermine the rigidity of the cityscapes concrete structures. We see glimpses of the body in the golden liquid light which may be rain water for bodily fluids?) weeds or bits of rope which may appear momentarily as hair whilst discarded food wrappers remind us of a human presence. It is these traces coupled with the magical transformative quality of her work which open up new possibilities and optimism for the city and its inhabitants. (LL)
