No one much doubts this merely skillful character of litera- ture. The proof is in the pejorative connotation of the word rhetoric; the explanation in the fact that all men are literati-since to argue or move to pity or tell a story partake as much of literature as the act of writing and tend to be more successful as such- and as literati they all know how possible literature is and how mistaken are those who im- pute special merit to those versed in it.
