About the book >.>.> WHEN the Guards were first sent to Gibraltar in 1897 it was decided that the old roster for active service should be superseded and that the Battalion or Battalions actually at that station should be the first for service. On the breaking out of war with the Boer Republics in 1899 the new arrangement did not in point of fact make any difference to the priority of service of the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadiers over the other Battalions of the Regiment the 3rd having served at Suakim in 1885 and the 1st at Khartum in 1898. In 1899 the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadiers and the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream-the two Battalions of the Guards’ Brigade then stationed at Gibraltar-were officially warned for service in South Africa to form in combination with two other battalions to be sent from England a Guards’ Brigade at the seat of war.
