On still days steamships and in those days they were numerous left long trails of smoke which stayed until they were cleared by a favourable wind. The history of Steep Holm has been covered in depth in several books including Allsop Island (the island was purchased in memory of the naturalist and broadcaster Kenneth Allsop) Steep Holm at War Steep Holm Legends and History and Steep Holm Wild Life all by Rodney Legg who has many books on Wessex to his credit. I only hope that my collection of items about Flat Holm contained in this book will be of some interest. Producing this book involved constant reference to various sources; in most instances these sources were my friends and without their art assistance it could not (LL)
