About the book >.>.> This exhibition of Flemish drawings comprising a modest part of the collection of the late Frits Lugt is the first to be held since the eminent collector’s death. The original suggestion for the exhibition was made in 1970 by Mr. Herman Liebaers the Director of the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels. Frits Lugt agreed readily realizing the importance of a well-organised exhibition of the drawings and also remembering with gratitude the valuable co-operation he had received from the Royal Library some years previously. Shortly afterwards Sir John Pope-Hennessy the Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum proposed that the exhibition should be shown in London. Lugt gladly agreed to this though not without a certain diffidence. The two exhibitions will in fact constitute the first occasion on which a selection of over 120 drawings will be placed on show in the country of their origin after being seen in the country where most of them were acquired. The realization of this plan was interrupted by Frits Lugt’s sudden death on 15 July 1970. As a result and with the kind agreement of my Belgian colleagues it was decided to hold the exhibition in London in the spring of 1972 and in Brussels in the autumn of that year. The delay allowed more time for the compi- lation of the catalogue but it has been no easy matter to prepare a comprehensive description of the large number of drawings exhibited owing to the variety of material that had to be consulted and the almost complete lack of the necessary documentation.
