About the book >.>.> Francesco Vettori (1474-1539) colleague of Machiavelli and Guicciardini was recognized by his contemporaries as a major influence in Florentine politics especially during the period of the later Medici but this is the first full-length modern study to be devoted to him for over half a century. His career spanned more than thirty years of European history and took him at various times to the French German and papal courts during a period which witnessed the Hapsburg-Valois struggle for supremacy in Italy the sack of Rome in 1527 and the siege of Florence in 1529-30. Drawing on unpublished archival sources Dr Devonshire Jones builds up from Vettori’s despatches letters and his political and historical writings a detailed account as seen at first hand of Renaissance diplomacy and of political life in Florence under both republican and Medici regimes.
