About the book >.>.> The decision in the late 1990s to redevelop a large part of the Broadmead area of Bristol presented an opportunity for extensive archaeological investigations of this suburb of the city. This volume presents an account of the prehistoric environment of Broadmead through its medieval development to 19th-century expansion drawing on the results of borehole survey archaeological excavation standing buildings recording and extensive historical research. The archaeological works were undertaken between 2005 and 2008 by a consortium formed by Cotswold Archaeology and Pre-Construct Archaeology known collectively as CAPCA. The investigations comprised a series of interventions ranging from open area excavations to the monitoring of pipe trenches and watching brief work. The extent and depth of archaeological interventions thus varied in size according to the redevelopment project’s requirements; nevertheless they enabled a detailed investigation of the history of the area’s development. Borehole data provided the only evidence for prehistoric activity in the area demonstrating that whilst floodplain and channel areas occupied the southern parts of the site woodland clearance had commenced in upland zones by the later Neolithic. From around 2500 cal. BC until medieval occupation commenced the area was occupied by tidal mudflats and presumably little visited although the uplands continued to be exploited for farming activities. Lying just beyond the city walls and overlooked by the castle a Dominican friary was founded here in 1227 one of several religious houses’established in the Bristol environs in the 13th century.
