About the book >.>.> John Gilman writer artist and poet grew up in Minehead and attended the Grammar School here. National service in the Royal Navy followed by years in ships out of Avonmouth confirmed his already strong interest in the sea and its vessels. After reading history at university he followed a career in teaching. Now he writes novels and history books with a West Somerset focus of which The Girl on the Beach and Exmoor’s Maritime Heritage are probably the best known. He is also well known for his ship models. John has contributed to post-graduate research into maritime history especially as regards Bristol Channel shipping and has written many papers and articles on this subject. For this book he has also drawn on his comprehensive collection of photographs of local ports begun in 1947 and on conversations with well-known coastal seamen such as Captain Philip Stanley Rawle (‘Old Stan’) and Captain Hugh Shaw.
