About the book >.>.> Although several well-illustrated publications on Yeovil’s past have appeared in recent years no study in depth of the town’s political and economic growth in the early 19th century exists. The writer became interested in this period when asked to contribute to the centenary (1954) book ‘The Borough of Yeovil: its history and government’. His research has since embraced parliamentary as well as local records: in particular a valuable collection of documents preserved in Mayo and Son’s offices and borough records discovered in the Municipal Offices have revealed in unusual detail the movement for local government reform leading up to the Act of 1854 which created the Municipal Borough of Yeovil. This period saw the expansion of the town beyond its tiny medieval boundary and the economic development which lay behind it. The writer believes that a detailed description of this growth based on original sources will be of interest not only to Yeovil people but also to students of local government. (LL)
