About the book >.>.> My interest in Arthur Jones was started by a chance find that I made in the papers of the Sanford family of Nynehead Court in Somerset held in the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton. In 1867 Jones wrote three letters to William Ayshford Sanford. What made the letters stand out was firstly where they were written – the towns of Pau and Argel?s- de-Bigorre in the French Pyrenees – and secondly their content. As well as describing his family’s life during their two-year stay in the Pyrenees in 1866-1868 Jones talks about his scientific activities and his contacts with members of the Soci?t? Ramond a Pyrenean counterpart of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society. The letters are of particular interest to me because of my contacts with the Pyrenees. These began in 1993 when staff from the Parc National des Pyr?n?es visited Exmoor where I was working for the National Park Authority.
