About the book >.>.> In these ecumenical days it still comes as a mild shock when Christians who are not of the Roman Communion hear their Catholic brothers and sisters sing with great feeling many of those hymns that have long formed part of the staple diet of their own worship. ‘Hey they’re singing one of ours’ was the immediate and recent reaction of the writer when he was present one Saturday morning at the beautiful conventual Mass of the Cistercian monks of Mount St Bernard. Their introit had been John Keble’s ‘Blessed are the pure in heart’. Of course he was secretly pleased not only because it marked just one more step albeit a very tiny one in the drawing together again of Canterbury and Rome but also because it made the point very tangibly that this must be a two-way process. Unity when it comes will be a sharing of the riches we have each received in our separate traditions. Since John Keble one hundred and fifty years ago preached his famous Assize sermon on National Apostasy thus launching the Oxford Movement Canterbury has frequently raided the abundant liturgical treasury of the Roman Catholic Church to enhance Anglican worship. More recently other Christians have joined many Anglicans in coveting the daily portion from one of the Fathers which is provided as a second lesson for the Office of Readings in The Divine Office the Roman Catholic breviary. The Church of England has always insisted that it is a Church based not only on scripture but also on the creeds teachings and tradition of the early Church. Where better can one look for these traditions than in the works of the early Fathers? (SP)
