Appointed by Churchill in 1941 to head a mission to Syria and Lebanon Spears found himself at war not only with the Germans and the Vichy French but equally with the Free French and the Foreign Office! In his brilliant descriptions of the battles he was forced to fight no one is spared the merciless lash of his pen. Sir Henry Wilson Wavell Catroux and of course de Gaulle all suffer under his rigorous examination.
