About the book >.>.> Ladies and gentlemen this is a public safety message. All people to the right of the stage by the sea must move back towards the West Pier. In the interests of safety please follow the stewards and police advice and we’ll start the show again as soon as possible. Thank you.’ It could be Ibiza. The air is balmy with mid summer heat. A sunset bleeds its brilliant heady hues across the horizon. The waves lap the beaches with gentle invitation while the sea plays host to a multitude of yachts and pleasure cruisers. People drunk with enjoyment wade into the waters cooling blood and washing away the daily grind of real life while all across the mile-long stretch of pebble beach people dance like they’re a part of the greatest party on Earth. Smiles spread contagiously encouraging people to lift their feet and jump to the adrenalised music which is busy challenging the sunset for impact. Throughout the town pubs lie nearly deserted while off-licences fight off the avalanche of customers all seeking supplies for the perfect beach party. But the cans of beer ran out hours ago; not a drop can be found within a mile of the seafront. Some off-licences are almost stripped bare of all alcohol and are declaring all-time record takings. Back on the beach some of the more enterprising locals wander around the crowd selling shots of tequila and overpriced warm lagers to the thirsty masses. Behind them at one end of the beach to the east the Palace Pier flickers with fairground lights while far in the west the silhouetted shapes of the Hove beach-side houses-known as Millionaires Row to the locals-can just be seen. It’s here that our host calls home. (LL)
