About the book >.>.> This book is not a monograph on the Futurist artists but an illustrated anthology of their writings. It may well be that many readers will share the feelings of the German Expressionist Franz Marc who wrote to Kandinsky in 1912: ‘I cannot free myself from the strange contra- diction that I find their ideas at least for the main part brilliant but am in no doubt whatsoever as to the mediocrity of their works. One can only judge for oneself: the works are illustrated here and elsewhere and in this book the ideas are placed on record. This introduction is an attempt by an Italian critic who has concerned himself very deeply with the art of our own time to set some aspects of Futurism in the context of the development of twentieth-century ideas on art. The movement needs to be considered as a single entity not in the light of individual achievements. Nobody studies say the Bauhaus through its individual promoters and followers; its contribution is seen as a whole. The merit of Futurism as a movement lies in the fact that it refuted the idea of an art which is nothing but personal pleasure remote from the complexities of everyday life. Indeed the Futurists saw the practice of art as a fount of energy capable of playing a role in the management of civil affairs to such an extent that no productive element of the environment should remain untouched by it.
