About the book >.>.> The work of Gary Hill has attracted increasing attention in the past few years in exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. Hill’s installations and video objects are compelling haunting works that engage the viewer in real time. Electronic and viewer space are interwoven in these works and the experience is not so much looking at (as in television viewing) as it is engaging with (as in personal relationships). Beautiful and sometimes disquieting these works give us insight into art forms now emerging which create art from the raw materials of late 20th-century technology. This is the first exhibition to provide a view of major installation works by Gary Hill in the United States. As organized by Henry Art Gallery Senior Curator Chris Bruce the exhibition provides an opportunity for a national audience to experience key works of the last five years. We are most grateful for the assistance and cooperation of the artist in the development of the exhibition and catalogue. Organization of a traveling exhibition of this scope and technical complexity is always difficult but our work was immeasurably aided by the knowledge and efforts of Gary Hill and his assistants Dave Jones Paul Kuranko and Mark McLoughlin. Donald Young of the Donald Young Gallery has long been a supporter of Gary Hill and was an essential partner in the organization of this important exhibition. We are most grateful to have the opportunity to work with our colleagues at the museums participating in the exhibition tour and particularly want to thank James Demetrian director Neal Benezra chief curator and Phyllis Rosenzweig curator Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Washington D.C.; Kevin Consey director Richard Francis chief curator and Beryl Wright associate curator of exhibitions Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago: Richard Koshalek director and Paul Schimmel chief curator The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles; and Thomas Krens director and Nancy Spector associate curator Guggenheim Museum Soho. In addition we received much assistance in the organization of the exhibition and preparation of the catalogue from Tina Oldknow and Cara Kennedy of the Donald Young Gallery Seattle. (LL)
