About the book >.>.> Chippendale Hepplewhite and Sheraton are still popularly associated with all the best furniture produced in England between 1750 and 1800. Here this famous trio are shown in right relation to their contemporaries. Chippendale as the prevailing genius of the rococo is deposed in favour of William Vile and his reputation is found to depend mainly on inlaid furniture in the neo-classic style. The exist- ing canon of Chippendale’s work has been augmented by some im- portant examples added to the productions of his later phase. Neither to Hepplewhite nor Sheraton can a single piece of furniture be convincingly assigned. On the other hand the achieve- ments of such comparatively un- familiar makers as John Gumley James Moore Benjamin Goodison the Linnells and Thomas Chippen- dale the younger. (SP)
