About the book >.>.> The Froehlich Foundation collection which this catalogue documents fully was initiated in 1982 by Josef and Anna Froehlich. A visit to Documenta 7 in September of that year sparked their tran- sition from informed onlookers to active participants in art. The Froehlichs’ reaction to seeing ‘Friedenshase’ 1982 (p. 2) a work by Josef Beuys in which a jewel-encrusted gold replica of Ivan the Terrible’s crown was transformed into a golden hare – led to their close involvement with Beuys and eventually with a number of other German and American artists. Without being consciously aware of it by inquiring about ‘Friedenshase’ the Froehlichs had taken the first step towards forming a collection which now numbers some 320 works. The collection includes the work of nine German and ten American artists and is based on the principle of ‘Sammlungs- bl?cke’. As a rule each of these artists is represented by a group of works which has been rigo- rously selected to represent his or her individual achievement as well as their contribution to the art of our time. In the case of some artists the collection includes a comprehensive survey of the artist’s entire career. For example Sigmar Polke is represented by paintings photographs and works on paper made over a twenty-five year period. The full range of Bruce Nauman’s work drawings photographs sculpture video and neon pieces – is also included. (MP)
