About the book >.>.> GERMAN ROMANTIC PAINTING is the first major survey on the subject to be published in English. The movement which produced some of the loveliest paintings of the early and middle nineteenth century in many ways anticipated Impressionism. The German Romantics were the first to exploit landscape as a theme in itself to which they applied highly individual interpretations. Hubert Schrade explores the background and growth of the movement bringing a new clarity to this period by dispensing with the customary dis- tinction between Classicists Romantics and Realists. Instead he focuses on the individual painters within their historical context. Professor Schrade a leading German art historian and the author of a dozen important works in the field joined the faculty of the University of T?bingen in 1954. Although the Romantics abandoned tradi- tional Christian subjects they did not abandon religion in their paintings. They took landscape as their subject but did not depict it literally. Rather they infused the landscape with the divine qual- ities they perceived in nature. Carl Gustav Carus coined the term “earth-life art” to describe this type of landscape one that strove to evoke religio-aesthetic experience. The illustrations represent the movement’s quintessential figures: there are the mystical sea- scapes and moonlit scenes of Caspar David Fried- rich the delicate symbolic works of Philipp Otto Runge the dark craggy mountains of Joseph Anton Koch the intimate genre scenes of Georg Friedrich Kersting the paintings of the Nazarenes. Numerous graphic works are also included. The author’s commentaries on the 40 fine colorplates provide keen analyses of the works and pertinent facts about each artist. A selected bibliography and an index round out the volume. (MP)
