About the book >.>.> The Glossary contains definitions relating to over 1250 words and terms used by miners in the Derbyshire orefield. Most entries are accompanied by contemporary quotations and relevant historical information. The earliest terms in this book have been traced back to the 13th century though the former lead mining industry is considerably older. With the notable exception of the great Millclose Mine and one or two short-lived ventures lead mining has been virtually extinct in Derbyshire since about 1900. Background research has been on- going for over 45 years whilst the book itself has been in preparation for about 8 years. Other Derbyshire mining glossaries have been published the earliest being that by William Hooson in 1747. Williamson and Kirkham produced lead mining glossaries within the last 75 years and 50 years respectively but this is the first time such a large compilation with extended descriptions quotations from original sources and historical data has been attempted.
