About the book >.>.> Since the original German edition of this book was published in 1949 it has been translated into twenty-six languages and read by millions of people. It first appeared in this country in 1952 and was reprinted fourteen times in the following eighteen years. In the meantime archaeology has marched on. New discoveries have been made new interpretations advanced and above all remarkable new techniques for archaeological research developed. To cover these new developments the author has revised the original edition made ex- tensive additions to the original text and concluded the book with a summary of important new finds and methods. New light for example has been shed on the mysterious rise and disappearance of the Aztec Mayan and Toltec civilisations in Mexico and Central America. The chapter on Sumerian excavations has been updated and new techniques of exploration and of dating finds-particularly the remarkably precise technique of tree-ring dating-are explained.
