About the book >.>.> My enduring interest in forest stud- ies goes back ultimately to my boy- hood days in Simcoe County Ontario. I loved the woods the streams the lakes and later on spent summers fire-ranging in north- ern Ontario. I gained a first-hand knowledge of the Canadian bush and the realization dawned on me that the whole of eastern Canada was hewn out of the forest. After service in the Royal Navy during the First World War I went to the Public Archives in Ottawa as assistant to Dr. Adam Shortt then Chairman of the Board of Historical Publications. An economic historian who had entered the public service after years of teaching at Queen’s University he suggested that the timber trade would be a rewarding subject for postgraduate research. It sufficed for my Master’s degree from Toronto (supervised by Dr. Shortt) and later for my doctoral disserta- tion at Harvard. The latter was a voluminous work. and some years later when I began to overhaul it with publication in mind I realized that I would have to make more than one book of it. This stage coincided with the Great Depression of the 1930s. (SP)
