About the book >.>.> Less than ten years ago the museums in Vienna began to grapple with their hitherto largely neglected stores of photographs. The increasing awareness of the great art-historical significance of these collections which ran parallel to their progressive reappraisal led to the first mono- graphic reviews of individual photographers such as Heinrich K?hn and Anton Trcka and the organization of photo exhibitions. Based on these it has now become possible to reconstruct a nearly consistent image of the mutually dependent and charged relationship that prevailed between the mediums of photography and the fine arts around 1900. As the center of Austrian art in an international context this theme is of utmost importance for the Belvedere and will therefore be addressed in the near future in an exhibition titled Bild- rauschen. Special focus will be given to the situation of artistic photographs in Vienna around 1900 and the question of how this medium served the fine arts as both an aid and stimulus. The various developmental stages of photographic art forms such as Pictorialism will likewise be examined and related to relevant paintings. Photography’s painterly appearance for example was largely achieved through chemical development techniques. The bromoil process gum bi chromate oil transfer platinum print etc. are all clear indicators of contemporary photographers efforts to penetrate the strictly demarcated arena of the fine arts. Among the most significant protagonists of this movement were for example Hugo Henneberg Heinrich K?hn and Hans Watzek. The majority of the then well-known photographers and art photographers moved in the same artistic circles as Gustav Klimt and several were also friends of the famous painter. (MP)
