About the book >.>.> Gustave Moreau whose one hundred and fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in 1976 is one of the most elusive and mysterious figures in the history of modern painting. He lived a secluded life and his work was known only to an ?lite. On his death in 1898 he bequeathed his Paris studio and everything in it to the State as a museum. Pierre-Louis Mathieu has been working through the archives of the Gustave Moreau Museum since 1963 and has located most of the artist’s known works. In this book he has provided a well-documented biography but his chief aim has been to trace the develop- ment of Moreau’s art year by year. He has thus compiled a complete monograph on this important artist and his work carefully plac- ing him in the context of the major art move- ments of the later nineteenth century. The author also evaluates the influence exerted by Moreau both in literature and art particularly as a teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where Rouault Matisse and Marquet were among his students. But the significance of Moreau does not end there for Andr? Breton regarded him as a true initiator of the Surrealist aesthetic and both Max Ernst and Salvador Dali have recognized him as one of the precursors of Surrealism. (OS)
