About the book >.>.> IT IS NOT unusual for retired military officers to write their memoirs. The bookshelves hold many such volumes written by men past their prime but full of years and honour. They are the basis of much of our study of warfare and the personalities in command. My own quarter of a century in the British Army ended pre- maturely and there is little precedent to justify a volume of military memoirs from one who did not attain the heights to which he aspired professionally. But as my resignation arose from the peculiar circumstances which surrounded the actions of the 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Aden in 1967 and coincided with the decision of the Government to disband the Argylls by 1971 I believe that it is in the public interest to put the record straight. This story of life in a famous regiment should highlight the need to retain the Argylls in the British Army-for the Argylls are the original Thin Red Line and it is inconceivable to think of the British Infantry without them; not so much because of the magnificent past of the Argylls but because of their high professionalism at the present time which attracts so many volunteers to their ranks when overall recruiting figures are low.
