About the book >.>.> I love drawing and always have done from the time I was a boy at school – it was the lesson I enjoyed most. As an art student I realized that the great sculptors whom I admired – Michelangelo Bernini Rodin – had all been great draughtsmen. Ingres said ‘Drawing is the probity of art’ and I believe it is an essential foundation. There are different methods of drawing of representing solid objects on a flat surface. One can draw with dark on a light surface or with light on a dark surface describing the shape of the object by showing where light is reflected back from it to the observer and where the surface turns away from the light. We have a little drawing by David which is a very strong example of this kind of modelling with light and shade. The laws of perspective are as important in drawing as light and shade. Nearer objects appear larger than more distant ones and this is another means of expressing three-dimensional form on a flat surface. Around the late 1920s I found a personal way of describing three- dimensional form using line without light and shade. I let my pencil follow an imagined horizontal section of the form I was drawing and then change direction at right angles to follow the vertical section. These ‘sectional lines’ are a shorthand method of describing three-dimensional form and there are several examples of this method of mine in the exhibition. (LL)
