About the book >.>.> As a result of Judge Untermyer’s generous and enlightened foresight the objects that have come to the Museum 21 29 in number will not remain together but go to strengthen three different areas of our European holdings. Their most significant contribution will be to our collection of English decorative arts which thanks to them will now be nearly without rival. The German porcelains hardly to be matched anywhere outside Germany will give the Museum eminence in this field. The Muscum’s collection of Renaissance bronzes will also be substantially enlarged and strengthened by the Judge’s numerous distinguished examples both Italian and Northern. Prior to this distribution we present in this exhibition the very best of the entire collection both to suggest the Judge’s total achievement as a collector and to pay tribute to his sense of quality the broad range of his historical and cultural interests and his independent taste for the unique and the rare. The exhibited objects have been studied by curators of the departments of Medieval Art and Western European Arts over a period of some three years and the catalogue they have prepared reflects scholarship published over the last twenty years in almost all the fields represented in the collection.
