About the book >.>.> When I was a junior in college and still early in my studies to become a Jesuit priest. I went to a conference on the international work of Jesuits. The main speaker was a respected Jesuit from the Philippines Fr. Horatio de la Costa. In the course of his reflections he said that in today’s world we are called to have “hearts as large as the world”; we need to imagine think. empathize pray across all the geographical and psychological distances and barriers which divide our world into parts. I had already been curious about the wider world but the call to open our hearts gave new energy to my awak-ening interest made it come alive in a concrete way. It was the right advice at the right time and it opened a new pathway for me. I realized that I wanted to understand and experience the world particularly its religious traditions more fully and inclusively than I had until that time in my life. His simple words invited me to begin that spiritual quest. When I graduated from college I was expected to teach high school for several years as part of my Jesuit training so I started exploring opportuni-ties outside the United States. I asked around and corresponded with Jesuits in different parts of the world. But I was most fascinated by the idea of go-ing to India. Although I knew almost nothing about Hinduism or Buddhism. I did know that my heroes included Mohandas Gandhi and Mother Teresa. (LL)
