Chronology may be a tool for navigation but it does not guarantee any personal experience of time in the face of constructs that have become arbitrary in contemporary culture. They were safest in the old history of salvation which became secular in the history of progress. But the latter paradigm has also left us and with it the power of expectation the loss of which threatens us as a symbol of death. We hoped to have overcome death by that social transcendence that we emphatically call “future.” We nevertheless look out for icons of identity in order to know who we are and where we stand. Like “History” modernist “Art” used to be an icon that served not only as an undisputed symbol of progress but also as a powerful tool in the politics of representation. Religion’s former promise to provide an all-embracing sense had earlier been transferred to art. But also our faith in art’s capacity as an icon of identity has been shattered. We therefore tend to speak of the end of art as if trying to learn something through repetition. Expectation is guided by experience.
