About the book >.>.> Before the arrival of the Romans there would have been tracks paths and fords over rivers connecting various settlements. The rivers would also serve as a safer form to travel inland and no doubt the local river Stour was such a route. We know there were people in the area in the B.C. period close to the village are the ancient Barrows and forts of Spettisbury and Badbury Rings. However in 1991 as local Ancient Monuments Officer I instigated an archeological survey in a field adjoining the river Stour and close to the Parish Church in a field now known as Walnut Tree Field (because of the 350 year old Walnut Tree) but old documents previously show it as John Crabs field and Bullens Orchard. The erection of a flood barrier by the Rivers Authority was planned and as this was thought to be the old village settlement it was my concern that a dig was made before the area was covered. The Oxford Archeological Unit carried out the survey in August/September 1991 and were amazed to find Mesolithic Neolithic Saxon and Mediaeval period artifacts and skeletons buried in the Christian manner but not as yet dated. Other Bronze and pre Bronze age relics have been found in digs at Herons Grove on Henbury Hill. (LL)
