About the book >.>.> Nebraska history took on new meaning as we walked through an abandoned pioneer cemetery nearby discovering that the five graves along the road were siblings. How did their mother survive that I wondered looking at my four children-three of whom would have died of childhood illnesses in the 1800s. (Thank God for that gooey pink medicine.) Perched beneath a pine tree I surveyed tombstones and mounds of earth long-since unmarked when their wooden markers rotted away asking questions of my home-schooled children. Was there a doctor nearby? How far did they walk to school? How many of these trees were here when these children played up the road? We sought answers as part of our Nebraska history unit and once again I was drawn to the stories of western women especially the ones who lived in soddies. When in 2001 1 co-curated a quilt exhibit with the International Quilt Study Center and Museum and the Nebraska History Museum reading donor files was part of the selection process. The phrase “came west in a covered wagon … used in a sod house…” recurred and once again the lives of women inhabiting sod how beckoned. (LL)
