About the book >.>.> The Mention in Despatches or MiD was originally just that a mention of an Officer NCO or enlisted serviceman by a senior officer or commander in a despatch to his superiors. The “mention” could be for gallantry or for other conspicuous duty that had brought the man to the attention of his superiors. Along with the Victoria Cross it was for many years the only type of formal “award” or recognition that a man could receive after his death-no decorations apart from the VC being awarded posthumously. All too often the MID has been overlooked disregarded even and considered by some to be an inferior award-given in recognition of an act not worthy of a specific gallantry decoration. However nothing could be further from the truth and every man listed within the pages of “HONOUR THOSE MENTIONED” is a hero in his own right.
