About the book >.>.> When most people think of camper vans they invariably think of Volkswagens. In fact it’s arguable that VW started the camper van trend in the early 1950s when the first of the Type 2s (the type number given to all Transporters initially to distinguish them from Type 1 Beetles) were converted and used in that first flush of post-war freedom from conflict in Europe. Cut to today and there’s still no substitute for the reliability and practicality of a VW Camper conversion even though things have moved on considerably from those early days. The first Transporter the split-screen model now called T1 by Volkswagen and its successor the Bay Window’ (T2) model are very much sought after and cared for. They’re not covered in this manual though simply because the raw materials in the form of bare vans waiting to be converted are not readily available. Type 2 T3s built from 1980 to 1991 and Type 2 T4s built from 1991-on can still be found earning their keep as working vans and there are even versions available with factory-fitted side windows. T3s (rear-engined) and T4s (front-engined) are also available with various petrol/gasoline engine sizes as well as in diesel and/or 4WD Syncro form and often with other mod cons such as power steering electric windows and mirrors
