About the book >.>.> So why did I agree to do it? Well actually I didn’t. lain his remarkable wife Jilli and our mutual friend Linda. were having drinks together at the Balmoral. I liked lain immediately. His lively interest in the world his passion for art in particular and his considerable charm put me at ease and the photos he began to take of us all seemed the usual record we keep of enjoyable occasions. Had the “shoot” been more formal or at least in my case more conscious. I suppose I might have stiffened up a bit or felt I needed to work more at composing with lain the image I wanted to present to the world. But it wasn’t and I didn’t. So when he surprised me some months later with not a snap shot but a work whose artistry was clear I was able to look at the fellow portrayed and the strategy of portrayal with some objectivity. Like others who have seen lain’s work I was immediately entranced by his use of colour. Shaped as so many of my generation have been by the bleached whites and concrete greys of modernism I am thrilled (it’s exactly the right word) by lain’s brilliant splashes of reds and greens so unrespectful of the original gentility of the palm court where I sat. The greys and whites he uses to wonderful effect on the one hand to create in my face a grizzled presence truer than the actual shaven face I presented that day and perhaps mostly wonderfully of all. to make of the martini I am clearly enjoying the shimmering focus of the composition and it is implied my life at least at that moment.
