About the book >.>.> William Morris’s two journeys to Iceland in the summers of 1871 and 1873 filled him with a great passion for the whole heroic literature of that country and produced as a consequence some of his most lively unmannered and modern prose. The first of the journeys was taken at a time when Morris needed some distraction some discipline to ease his mind of the knowledge of his wife’s relationship with Rossetti and it was perhaps the com- bination of personal distress and his fascinated interest in the sites of the Icelandic sagas that inspired the break away from somewhat tiring political romances into a prose style of particu- lar richness. For this reason it has been thought desirable to make available the journals (unobtainable since inclusion in the collected works edited by his daughter 1910-15) in a separate volume for they are a work of great merit that no student of Morris should be without and have often been described as Morris’s finest prose. The Introduction is by James Morris F.R.S.L. (SP)
