About the book >.>.> The period that linked prehistory with the great civilizations of the past saw shoes change from practical functional objects to become the attributes of the gods and sym- bols of status in their form material and col- our. Shoemaking was developed especially by the ancient Greeks who invented all the bas- ic types of shoe and defined and rationalised their function. Their great shoemaking tradi- tion spread throughout the Roman Empire to decline thereafter during the barbarian in- vasions. With the dawning of the Middle Ages how- ever the shoemaker-craftsman re- appeared. In succeeding centuries shoemak- ing gained increasing importance in the economic centres of Europe and in the general development of fashion its symbols and its endlessly new demands. Since 1600 the heel has become an estab- lished feature and inseparable accessory to the shoe to the point of altering the walk of both women and men. It is the single most popular element of dress and has become the main focus for study by stylists. Federico Bondi was born in 1932 in Venice where he studied art and science and where he started while still a student to work as a critic. Graduating from the University Institute of Architecture in Venice he concentrated on the study of structures made in hypertensile plastic the planning of public buildings architec tural restoration and industrial design and likewise developed a knowledge of photography operational research psycho-mathematics and didactics. In 1966 in his role as Secretary General he organised the 2nd National Exhibition of Carrara marble and took part in the international symposium on the contribu- tion of operative research to urban and regional planning. As a critic he has taken part in the pre- paration of exhibitions held conferences published essays and profiles on contem- porary artists and contributed to reviews and periodicals.
