About the book >.>.> Living and walking in the Quantocks learning to appreciate the quiet beauty and friendly charms of their combes and places-Crowcombe and Bagborough Cothelstone and Stogursey Kilve Dodington and the Quantoxheads and my own Over Stowey-I found myself reading a good deal about its past and the literature it produced. People born in these parts grumble about how much it has changed especially in the last half-century. No doubt it has. But to someone like myself who has come to know and love the region latish in life the wonder is that it has changed so little. Studying the diaries of the Rev. William Holland rector of Over Stowey who lived in the house next to mine I note that most of the habitations he mentions are still there in some cases lived in by descendants of the same families. The place has still a strong character of its own friendliness and hospitality public service and private charity a devotion to field sports and all the interests and love of country life not least gardening for the gardens of the Quantocks large and small are one of its glories. For those who have lived here all their lives this collection will stir fond memories. For those like myself who have come here for rest it tells us much we did not know. For strangers it is the perfect introduction to the past of a living countryside which still flourishes and radiates beauty. If it persuades them to get to know the Quantocks they have in store an immense pleasure which will last them the rest of their lives. I congratulate the compilers on a work well worth doing and nobly done. (LL)
