About the book >.>.> This exhibition represents the third in a series of collaborations between our two museums that began in 2005 with Rembrandt and His Time and was followed in 2006-2007 by Biedermeier: The Invention of Simplicity an internationally acclaimed exhibition that presented a new interpretation of the period. It is with distinct pleasure that we have partnered again to develop an exhibition that likewise offers new aesthetic and art historical insight this time with the Impressionist and Post- Impressionist movements in nineteenth-century France. Monet Degas Renoir C?zanne Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec among other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists all made drawings that were as significant as their paintings resulting in an elevation of the status of the drawing medium. In fact 40 percent of the works displayed in the eight Impressionist exhibitions held between 1874 and 1886 were works on paper yet very little attention has been paid to the drawings these artists made independently of their paintings. This exhibition proposes that it was the drawings – with idiosyncratic degrees of finish in charcoal cont? crayon gouache and pastel – that challenged the long- standing hegemony of painting. The result is that the art of drawing became a touchstone for the avant-garde. (MP)
