Vergil and Horace and that lot in Rome were buddies Coleridge and Wordsworth took forty-mile strolls together Byron hung out with Percy and Mary Bloomsberries fell in love with Bloomsberries satirists snarled at one another at the Algonquin beatniks clumped in buses. And the rest of us the lonesome non- famous writers envied them. We wished we could talk shop talk about writing with people who wrote. We wished we could show our manuscripts not only to edi- tors fut to fellow writers whose judgment might be more collegial and less conventional. But unless you could parlay yourself into a writing retreat how did you find other nonfamous writers to clump with? Authorial isolation suddenly decreased with the invention of the peer-critique workshop style of teaching writing. People went home from such workshops and formed spin-off groups from which other groups bud- ded fractally. Now almost every city and town has some. (LL)
