About the book >.>.> We have sought to enhance the contribution of our work by these addi- tions while at the same time we have kept unchanged the underlying method-that of careful research and documentation-which characterized the preceding volumes of ‘P’Art Fran?ais series. The bibliography and the notices for each painting are no less complete than before. Formerly we have listed in the catalogue though in different type the pictures of doubt- ful authenticity for which we had not been able to make a conclusive judgement. Too often since references to our work have been claimed in favor of apocryphal paintings without quoting that we mentioned them as doubtful. We have therefore resolved to list here only the paintings of un- questionable authenticity. In the same way rather than being entirely exhaustive for each notice we have mentioned only those publications which have provided us with new information. However in preparing this volume we have gathered together a large amount of material on Ingres and we look forward to publishing all the documentation and correspon- dence of this great French artist. No catalogue of the work of Ingres has been published since the excellent study of Henri Delaborde which now dates back a hundred years. Our task was of a particularly large scope and has taken many years to fulfil. Even so we certainly could not have completed our work without the help and encouragement that we have increasingly received. We have always met with a most kindly reception from art historians owners of private collec- tions and keepers of museums. We only regret that throughout the years they have been so numerous that we are unable to offer here our thanks to cach of those to whom accrues a large share of the merit that our work may possess.
