About the book >.>.> Three kinds of books have been written about Intelligence. First there are spy stories written in the main to be taken at a draught and then forgotten; of these only a few-largely those concerned with the activities of real agents are serious contributions to the study of affairs. Secondly there are some earnest tomes almost all American whose object is to outline the role of Intelligence in support of national policy-making; these are mainly academic studies intended for specialist readers. The third group consists of autobiographies or memoirs by actual Intelligence officers. Books of this kind are relatively rare. Colonel Nicolai head of the German Secret Service in World War I published The German Secret Service a study that was withdrawn from circulation when its author was declared a traitor by the Nazis. General Stehlin who as a captain was assistant air attach? for France in Berlin at the time I was there as assistant British military attach? wrote an illuminat- ing account of his work. A fine description of the functioning of the German Intelligence machine in the early days of World War II was written by Major-General Liss who was in charge of the Western Intelligence Section of the German War Office from 1937 to 1943 and was a personal friend while I was an attach? in Berlin. General Gauch? dealt with certain aspects of French intelligence in Le Deuxi?me Bureau au Travail 1935-1940.* Allen Dulles has published an attrac- tive and revealing account of his activities in The Craft of Intelligence.
