About the book >.>.> Trade textiles which by definition traveled between cultures often reveal a conglomerate of design and technical features from several different lands. Indeed while working on this project we (the curatorial team) found that some trade textiles display design characteristics and production techniques that are so complicated that even after months or years of study the origins and dates of certain objects could not yet be firmly assigned. In fact this exploration would not even have been conceived with- out the puzzling attribution of one particular type of textile: eighteenth-century blue-resist-dyed cotton fabrics that for the last century have defied the experts as to where they were made. Their story is worth recounting. This type of cloth patterned with commonplace European-style floral and bird motifs-but dyed in a method first perfected in India and East Asia-is almost always found in America and had even been thought to have been the earliest type of American-made printed fab- ric. By the mid-twentieth century these textiles were assigned to English producers on the basis of a single piece with an English export mark in an American museum. None however had ever been found in England. (OS)
