About the book >.>.> In 1934 Irving Penn enrolled in the Philadelphia I Museum School of Industrial Art-since 1964 the Philadelphia College of Art-largely he claims now because of their forgiving admissions standards and the liberality with which they awarded scholarships. At the age of eighteen he had no focused ambitions that he now remembers and during his first year he contentedly and absent-mindedly drew from plaster casts and mod- eled clay figures. He recalls his fellow students as being more or less equally divided between purists who hoped to emulate Franklin C. Watkins 1* the faculty’s best-known painter and a man who had won many honors including the coveted Carnegie Prize and pragmatists who leaned toward the example of Henry Pitz a highly successful illustrator and follower of Newell Wyeth.
