About the book >.>.> The image of Islam in the European Middle Ages is a topic of vital interest to the field of medieval and early modern art and to global art histories. Though our focus for over thirty years has been on exhibiting both European art as well as Islamic art we have never before looked at both together in one project. By considering these two cultural forces as inextricably linked phenomena rather than discrete entities we have been better able to understand and provide meaningful context for both the Islamic and European artworks we present. This exhibition extends our commitment to the study of medieval entanglements by presenting Islamic and European objects side by side. In doing so this catalogue attempts to represent transcultural global art histories and interactions between the Islamic world and Europe during the ‘long’ Middle Ages. The group of objects illustrated here date from the early ninth century through to the seventeenth century and are connected by an important thread: each artwork illustrates the ongoing assimilation of Islamic aesthetics craft technology luxury objects and culture into the European visual repertoire.
