Indeed the retiring nature of the artist made this an essential element in the original research; he left no such store of letters or diaries as have often proved to be a gold-mine for the biographer. The general interest in his paintings has manifestly increased and fresh thoughts have been aroused about the nature of his art. Additionally a number of pictures included in the original catalogue raisonn? but then undiscovered have come to light and as many as possible of these have been reproduced here. The catalogue and illustrations of The Art and Life of J.W. Waterhouse RA however still form the most complete reference to the artist’s work. The acknowledgements voiced in the original book were both comprehensive and deeply felt.
