About the book >.>.> This book began from a feeling of injustice. In bookshops and on library shelves there are numerous volumes by and about William Morris Dante Gabriel Rossetti and George Bernard Shaw – the three chief male figures who feature in this story. Some may think that the amount of attention given to them is excessive but it is understandable. In the cultural history of their time these men were important famous figures each with a large body of artistic work that merits study. Their paintings designs and plays are still exhibited reproduced and per- formed and are the subject of academic criticism articles books and television programmes. Their biographies are still in print and in production. In this process the women in their lives are not entirely forgotten but are allotted a subsidiary subordinate role with emotional or domestic walk-on parts’. It could be argued that this is fully justifiable since it is the artistic achievement of the men rather than their personal relationships that renders their lives of interest to posterity and which naturally engages our continuing attention. By comparison the women’s role was subsidiary sometimes illuminating but fundamentally of lesser importance. Without Morris Rossetti and Shaw who would ever have heard of Jane or May Morris? (LL)
