About the book >.>.> The “dawn of the modern age” is a familiar phrase that applies in many respects to the period of the waning nineteenth century. It was the time when Paris was the centre of the art world and French Impression- ists rebelled against the conventions of academic Salon painting. In art history this moment is often referred to as the ‘Birth of modernism’ but at the very least it is seen as the origin of a development in which art increasingly liberated itself from academic rules and ultimately resulted in the plural- ism that characterises the fine arts today. But Impressionism can also be considered with regard to the ways in which art is a reflection of its times. To the extent that every cultural development flourishes in the fertile soil of its superordinate and coordinate circumstances it can also be seen as a mirror of the social political and economic conditions in which it originated. In Japan’s Love for Impressionism the Bundeskunsthalle is presenting an exhibi- tion with masterpieces of French Impres- sionism from Japanese collections. It may come as a surprise that the concentration on these works does not entail any kind of qualitative or even quantitative limits for an exhibition.
