About the book >.>.> The Norton Museum is honored to organice and present the first survey of Jenny Saville’s work in an American museum. Recognized as an exceptional talent when just in her early twenties Saville has continued to create remarkable paintings and drawings that stir in us a mul titude of responses while she embraces the power of traditional media. We see in her work the rich history of painting as she references the masters from Leonardo da Vinci to Francis Bacon to Willem de Kooning. Her paintings and drawings are rich in context and demand that the viewer engage with the work This exhibition would not have been possible with-out the exceptional support of Alan Davis and Mary Lou Dauray and the RAW-Recognition of Art by Women-program they made possible with their gift from the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund/MLDauray Arts Initiative. To honor the example of extraordinary gener osity to the Norton Museum set by his parents Leonard and Sophie Davis Alan and his wife Mary Lou dedicated a gift of $1250000 that will allow the Norton to orga nize six exhibitions of paintings or sculptures by living women artists. The Davis’s generosity not only provided funds for a series of exhibitions and publications but also explicitly included funds to initiate educational pro-gramming and to establish the Sophie Davis Curatorial Fellowship thus allowing the Norton to rigorously approach these projects. It is the Norton’s good fortune that Cheryl Brutvan Curator of Contemporary Art has a distinguished history of working with women artists and has been able to use the Davis grant to organize this outstanding exhibition and publication in record time.
