About the book >.>.> The Fra Angelico of sculpture’: the Victor- ian comment on John Flaxman (1775-1826) covers nicely both his major artistic activity and the purity and clarity he brought to his art. Dr. David Irwin’s study of the artist the first full account to appear for many years also balances his achievement as an artist against his attitudes to life and art. For both his work and his thought are too com- plex for a simple epigram. As an artist Flaxman has a double reputa- tion. Known in his native country for his monumental and funerary sculpture particu- larly his memorials to Nelson and Lord Mansfield he was acknowledged by his European contemporaries as a master draughtsman for his illustrations to Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey were regarded rightly as masterpieces of the Neoclassical style. The sources of this artistic activity are here ably documented from the sketchbook drawings and journals Flaxman kept on his travels particularly his long and important stay in Rome. This study of the antique led to a third area of creativity for Flaxman was also a designer producing for Josiah Wedgwood designs for jasperware medallions urns and plaques and also designing an important series of silverware pieces for Rundell and Bridge many of which were bought for the Royal Collection.
