About the book >.>.> Early on the morning of 9 February 1555 John Hooper degraded bishop of Gloucester and Worcester limped the short way down Westgate Street toward the square opposite St. Mary’s Gate. Here near the main entrance to the cathedral precincts he was to be burned. For most of the crowd that gathered to watch it would be a singular experience but some would have known that Hooper was not the first to die this way in recent days. The more perceptive among them would have guessed that he would not be the last. Five days earlier the government of Mary Tudor began a new phase in its aggressive policy to destroy protestantism and restore the Church in England to the obedience of Rome. All of the laws passed by the parliaments of her father and brother designed to separate the Church from Rome had now been repealed and the kingdom had received the Pope’s absolution through Cardinal Reginald Pole papal legate and future archbishop of Canterbury. But this was not enough-now the government had to go about the business of winning hearts and minds. (LL)
